Welcome to Michigan weather, warm, cold, rain, snow,
sun, you name it we've had all of it since Friday. Today's temperatures
were acceptable and the sun even managed to pop out. Have heard from some
folks who have come down from the U.P.; from the Mackinaw Bridge, all
you can see for miles is solid ice. Let's hope the wind blows the right
way !
Thanks to all who have sent appreciative and supportive letters regarding
"The Scoop", remember let us know if you have anything you would
like to add.
Coming soon.....A look back in time at our rich Island History.....If
you have any family stories, photos or anything that you would like to
contribute, please let us know.

So
far the rising temperatures have had little effect on the ice conditions.
What started out as a beautiful sunny day quickly turned into a dreary rain,
which continues at this hour. As you can see from the photos, the North
Channel is clear both up and downriver of the ferry. With the exception
of some shore ice and a medium size ice flow near Russell Island, the St.
Clair River appears open up to East China (maybe farther but haven't driven
north of East China). We have been told there is considerable ice in Lake
Huron which potentially could effect the North Channel, of course, it all
depends on who you talk to, everyone seems to have a different opinion on
what our future holds. However, the common thread of opinion seems to be;
when the ice in Lake Huron comes down, what happens with the ice will depend
on which way the wind is blowing. Time will tell.

An Ice
Flow in the Ferry's Path
|
Waiting
on the ferry at the Algonac dock, a medium sized ice flow came out of nowhere
headed our way, the ever resourceful ferry pilot turned his engines into
"jets" and pushed the flow out of the dock and into the channel
where it quickly disappeared. It didn't phase the swans one bit.

Thanks
to A 2 Z Construction for providing us with the above photos. On the job
site, photos were taken of the ducks sunning themselves on the ice during
the warm-up. A 2 Z Trucks even braved the ice. Thanks Again !

According
to Harsens Island Fire Chief, Daryl Dupage, Clay Township Board Officals
have taken into consideration the purchase of an Airboat for the Harsens
Island Fire Department. Daryl has been researching several different types
of airboats and has found one to suit the needs of the Fire Department.
It's purposes are many, in the event of an "ice jam", emergency
situations can be managed. The airboat will also we used in "shallow
water" situations. Kudos to the Harsens Island Fire Department for
applying to the Board for this much needed addition to the Department.
The Board has tabled further discussion of this aquistion until the next
board meeting, so that additional documentation, such as financing alternatives
(to avoid mileage cost increases), can be provided by the Harsens Island
Fired Department. Once approved, the delivery date for the airboat would
be several weeks away, but hopefully would be here in time for the spring
thaw.
Wednesday
- February 18, 2004 - 12:00pm
All parents and the public are invited this afternoon to view
the Harsens Island Elementary School 4th and 5th grade Science Fair Projects.
The projects will be on display at the Harsens Island Elementary School
today from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. All of the students have worked very hard
putting these projects together, the projects will be judged at a later
date and those projects which meet certain criteria will go on to the
St. Clair County Science Fair on March 26, 2004, in Port Huron, to be
judged again for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. In past years several Harsens
Island Students have had their projects go on to the St. Clair County
Science Fair to win first place blue ribbons. The projects are always
interesting to view, so stop in if you have the opportunity.
Harsens Island
Elementary School will also have the honor of hosting Ms. Peggy Welsh-Syrnacki,
a reporter from the Detroit News on Thursday, February 26th. Peggy has
been a reporter for the Voice Newspaper and The Times Herald and will
be coming to the school with a photographer to write an article about
" A day in the life" of a Harsens Island student. The children
are very excited about her visit and we will post the Detroit News article
when it is published.
Check out the events calendar in February, for all the latest dates and
times for Algonac Little League Registration.
Wednesday - February 18, 2004 - 6:30am
We are still good to go on the ferry this morning, today is when temps
start increasing so the next few day might get a little hairy. Thank you
to all who have called and sent emails letting us know how much you are
enjoying the "Daily Scoop". We will continue to do our best
to give you the lastest and greatest information. A little bit later we
will be adding more events to the calendar so don't forget to check it
out, spring and summer are on their way and so are the activities. Also
a "Scoop" update will be coming your way a little bit later.
Tuesday
- February 17, 2004 - 7:00am
The ferry is on schedule this morning and again we
don't expect any problems unless the warmer temperatures headed our way
at the end of this week cause the ice to move. That's it for now.
Monday
- February 16, 2004 - 3:30pm
Well
everyone managed to hit the island today, garabage trucks (although late),
UPS, and others. The ferry path is holding and there haven't been any
delays. For you folks coming home from work you shouldn't encounter any
problems today and none are anticipated for the morning commute. Again,
as long as the temperatures hold, then so will the path. Look for our
report in the AM, unless something happens between now and then !
Monday
- February 16, 2004 - 9:00am
The North Channel looks pretty solid with ice this morning, it seems we
will be okay until the temperatures begin rising on Wednesday with a high
expected of 37°, increasing to the low 40's Thursday and Friday, it
might be wise to run all of your errands, groceries, banking, etc. today
and tomorrow. Kudos to Champion Ferry for working diligently in the wee
hours of this morning to clear a path for us, all of us appreciate the
hard work and dedication.
Monday
- February 16, 2004 - 6:00am
The
ferry is operating on a normal schedule, ice came in last night but with
the cold temperatures they were able to cut a path and are running one
ferry at this time, there is not a ferry line. They do not anticipate
any further problems until the temperatures rise later this week. This
is your morning report.
