RIVER
AND LAKE HURON UPDATE
Speaking of taking a few days off,
we travelled up to the thumb and got a "birds-eye" view of the
St. Clair River and Lake Huron. The river has absolutely no ice, Lakeport,
Lexington, Port Sanilac, Forestville, all the way up to as far as Deckerville,
No Ice to be seen on Lake Huron, maybe a patch here and there of very
insignificant shore ice, but thats it, nothing else. Just an FYI
HARSENS ISLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Yes, we took a few days off ! It was
great, which is one of the reasons the article below wasn't posted until
just now. It is a nice article about the Harsens Island Elementary School,
a few inaccuracies, but oh well, enjoy the story:

In
the last week, A Canadian trucker for SYSCO Corp, and an Algonac woman
were arrested by Border Patrol and local police in Harrision Twp. for
possession of more than 200lbs of marijuana, which they allegedly smuggled
through Harsens Island. See
Full Story......
Off the Island, also in the past week, a canadian garbage truck crossing
the Blue Water Bridge was apprehended hauling one ton of marijuana.
A
few nights ago, US Border Patrol, arrested 2 illegal aliens in possession
of $200,000 in cash, at the ferry to Harsens Island. The men arrested
were Canadian and Jamaican.
Kind
of a strange feeling knowing these types of activities are happening on
our peaceful little Island.

MARIJUANA FOUND !
You've seen it here 1st on HARSENSISLAND.COM
!
On January 31, 2004, the Harsens
Island Fire Department in conjunction with Ira Township made a startling
discovery. A suspicious bag was spotted by a Border Patrol Helicopter
on the ice in the Old Shipping Channel, "out about mid-river".
With the use of the Ira hovercraft, the HIFD recovered a duffle bag, which
they were surprised to find contained
approximately 45lbs of Marijuana ! Check out the pictures below ! But
that's not all, just a few days later on 2/2/04, another bag was spotted
about 100 yards from where the first bag was recovered. Wearing ice rescue
suits, the HIFD were able to walk out to retrieve the bag, this second
bag also contained approximately another 45lbs of Marijuana - Unbelieveable
! We had to ask the question - 90lbs of Marijuana is worth how much ?
Answer; "estimated value is $5,000 per pound", thats $450,000!
The recovered Marijuana was turned over to Border Patrol. Thank you to
Chief Dupage and the HIFD for this story and pictures. -

RAY HOTCHKISS
Our very own Ray
Hotchkiss became a member of the United States Merchant Marine, graduating
from the Unlicensed Apprentice Program at the Maritime Training and Education
facility in Maryland. Our favorite deckhand of past, Ray always had a
huge smile and a friendly attitude, we have missed Ray on the ferry but
we're sure he enjoyed his three month training aboard the M.V. American
Mariner, a US merchant vessel, as well as the instructional training he
received in Maryland. We are proud of you Ray ! Congratulations! -
