HARSENS ISLAND SCHOOL - MEET THE TEACHERS NIGHT 8/19

Tonight is Meet the Teachers Night at the Harsens Island Elementary School.
August 19th - 5:30pm - 7:00pm
Harsens Island Students and Parents come and meet the new staff at school, see your classrooms and enjoy refreshments.

Welcome to all the new staff at our little Island School !

The new Upper Level (grades 3 - 5) teacher, Mrs. Wendy Lucka, student taught in a multi-age classroom before teaching Kindergarten at the Woodland Academy in Detroit for 2 years. I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Lucka and her husband (a teacher at Algonac High) and she is looking forward to teaching a multi-age classroom and is anxious to meet her students and their families.

The new Lower Level (grades K - 2) teacher, Cheri Soultaire, comes to our school from Pte. Tremble Elementary. She has four children of her own and is estatic to be at Harsens Island. I also had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Soultaire, she is very enthusiastic and already has tons of ideas she would like to implement at the school.

The Harsens Island and Fairhaven principal is also new this year. Jennifer Dent has taught in the Port Huron Schools for 17 years, this will be Jennifer's first position as a principal. I am looking forward to meeting Ms. Dent.

Both teachers have been working very hard putting their classrooms together, very often you will see them at the school preparing to meet their students!

We are very excited and encouraged by all the new happenings at the school, despite some financial worries (more on that later), we are still moving forward and anticipate a stellar year !

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER !

Wow, I can't believe how quickly the time has flown! Sorry for the delay in updating and the 1 day delay in getting the photos up, what with 2 out of 3 kids showing horses every weekend, two new horses to keep up with and 2 kids racing motocross, not to mention daily life, there is just not enough hours in the day. Please vote on our August Photo Contest below and join in the Harsens Island River/Run Walk on Monday 9/6, details below. I have news stories up to my eyebrows which I will be posting over the course of the next few days; Harsens Island Elementary School; New teachers and discussion on the future of the school; Bridge information; etc., etc. Lots to come ! Labor Day, Monday, September 6, 2004
Race and walk start at 9:30AM
Kid's Run beginning at approx. 9:40AM
Sponsored by the Harsens Island Lions

Three mile competitive Run; Three mile competitive walk; Fun walk (any distance you are comfortable walking); Kid's Run - 12 and under (of varying short distance based on age group)

Race Fees:
$14.00 pre-registration fee; $16.00 race day fee

All profits and donations will be matched dollar for dollar by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

Proceeds from this year's run/walk will go to Jon Burby as he begins treatment for Leukemia.

Run: 16:24 - Men and 20:44 - Women
Walk: 22:58 - Men and 37:21 - Women
We will stopwatch time to maximize the amount of money donated to the Burby Family.

HARSENSISLAND.COM PHOTO CONTEST

Harsensisland.com is sponsoring a monthly photo contest which began July 1st. Submit your Harsens Island photo (information provided below) by August 15th for the August Contest and September 15th for the September contest, photos will be displayed and voted upon by our readers, there will be a First Place winner, Second Place winner and an honorable mention. Winners will be announced by the 30th of each month and will receive prizes of $25.00 for 1st place and $10.00 for 2nd place as well as being displayed on the harsensisland.com website throughout the summer.

The Harsensisland.com website averages hundreds of visits per day, if you are an amateur photographer, this is the place to have your photos viewed, if you're just submitting your photo for the heck of it, it's a great place to send your family and friends to view your pics.

Harsens Island is the place to capture beautiful photos, sunsets, nature, kids, pets, families, local events, etc. PLEASE keep your photos to a G rating, any photos submitted which are not appropriate in nature will obviously be disqualified.

Here are the rules:
You must be the owner of the photo or have expressed permission to submit the photo into the contest.

Photos may be color or black and white.

Photos can be submitted either by postal mail or email.

Postal Mail: Photos will be scanned and uploaded by the harsensisland.com staff, photo quality may be diminished by this method.

Include: Name, Address, Phone Number, and description of photograph, i.e., location, date, subjects, events, etc.

Please include reply email address, name and phone number, as well as a description of the photograph, i.e., location, date, subjects, events, etc. Photos submitted in a format other than jpeg or gif will not be submitted.
